Prototyping and materials
validate before producing
A prototype is worth more than a long description. The Esprit du Luxe R&D Studio produces zero-series mock-ups and 3D prototypes to validate the shape, insert, opening and strength of a packaging before production starts.
We test materials (papers, boards, wood, leathers, textiles, bio-based alternatives) and finishes on actual pieces, so that choices are informed and manufacturing lead times secured.
What we make
Blank mock-ups to validate volumes and proportions, zero-series mock-ups in the final materials, 3D prototypes for inserts and technical parts, printed and finished first copies, functional prototypes for opening mechanisms, pilot runs before launch. Each stage produces an object your teams can hold in their hands.
Why prototype
Packaging is judged in use: the weight, the strength of the insert, the ease of opening, the presence in a window, the behaviour in transport. The prototype reveals what the drawing does not show and allows corrections before committing to tooling and materials. It is the best way to secure production, costs and lead times.
Materials
We explore papers and boards, woods, leathers and alternatives, textiles, recycled and bio-based materials with you. We test them in the real conditions of the project: folding, covering, stamping, food contact, ageing. The studio's sample library allows several options to be compared quickly.
Finishes on the piece
Hot foil stamping, embossing, multi-level embossing, screen printing, laser cutting, varnishes and laminations: we have finishing trials made on the chosen material to validate the real result, in boutique light as well as in photographs. The trials also serve as the quality reference for production.
Method
In-depth preliminary study, technical drawing, choice of materials, prototype, review with your teams, corrections, signed reference copy, then launch. We document each version so that production reproduces exactly what was validated, with the most relevant technical partner in Switzerland or Europe.
Who we work with
Luxury brands, agencies and designers who need a technical partner to move from idea to object, purchasing departments that want to secure a production, start-ups launching a first packaging. The Esprit du Luxe R&D Studio is in Geneva.
Frequently asked questions
Is a prototype compulsory?
We recommend it for any new project: it is what secures production, costs and lead times. For an identical reorder, it is not necessary.
How long does a prototype take?
Usually a few weeks depending on the materials and finishes to be tested. The calendar is set at the study stage.
Can you test materials we have spotted?
Yes, we put them in real conditions (folding, covering, stamping, food contact, ageing) and give you a reasoned opinion.
